Where to watch the sunset in Da Lat, and what time is it?

For wide skies and sunset photos, head to a hilltop with an unobstructed western view. Couples may prefer a café overlooking the valley, while Xuan Huong Lake and Tuyen Lam Lake offer a quieter afternoon without a long hike.

By Da Lat LoversPublished Updated

In mid-November, the sun sets in Da Lat at around 5:18 PM. Down in a valley, though, the sunlight can disappear earlier because the surrounding mountains block the western horizon. For the best chance of a good Da Lat sunset, arrive 45-60 minutes before sunset, choose a viewpoint with an open western sky, and plan your visit during the generally drier months from December to March.

What time is sunset in Da Lat?

Sunset in Da Lat does not happen at the same time throughout the year. On some days, the sun sets as early as around 5:18 PM. In midsummer, it can remain above the horizon until approximately 6:15 PM. That difference of nearly an hour matters if you are planning an afternoon trip from the city center.

The table below shows approximate sunset times on the 15th of each month in 2026. All times are local Vietnam time (UTC+7).

MonthApproximate sunsetRecommended arrival
January5:41 PM4:30-4:45 PM
February5:53 PM4:45-5:00 PM
March5:57 PM5:00 PM
April5:58 PM5:00 PM
May6:03 PM5:00-5:15 PM
June6:11 PM5:15 PM
July6:15 PM5:15-5:30 PM
August6:06 PM5:00-5:15 PM
September5:47 PM4:45-5:00 PM
October5:28 PM4:15-4:30 PM
November5:18 PM4:00-4:15 PM
December5:24 PM4:15 PM

These are reference times for the middle of each month. Actual sunset times change from day to day, and the difference can be noticeable between the beginning and end of a month, above all from August through November.

The opposite can happen in a valley, where a mountain on the western side can cut off direct sunlight well before the official sunset time.

For a November visit to Xom Leo, aim to arrive around 4:00-4:15 PM. Leaving your hotel at 5:30 PM would be too late for the main sunset. June and July give you considerably more time: you can finish another attraction or stop for an early snack before heading to your chosen viewpoint.

Where are the best places to watch sunset in Da Lat?

There are three main types of sunset spots in Da Lat: elevated hills overlooking valleys, hillside cafés with west-facing seating, and lakes where the afternoon light reflects on the water.

Not every so-called sunset viewpoint offers a clear view of the sun itself. Some earn the name from the light falling across pine forests, greenhouses or distant mountains. For photos of the sun approaching the horizon, the direction of the view is just as important as the location.

Xom Leo

One of the best places for sunset photography

Hotpot tables above the greenhouse valley under a red sky.

Xom Leo is located along Huynh Tan Phat Street in the Trai Mat area, approximately 7-10 km from central Da Lat, depending on where you start. It has become a popular sunset area because several hillside viewpoints overlook the flower-growing valleys and large clusters of greenhouses around Thai Phien Flower Village.

From Xuan Huong Lake, travel toward Quang Trung and Hung Vuong streets, then continue toward Huynh Tan Phat Street. The journey generally takes 20-30 minutes by car or motorbike, although traffic and rain can increase the travel time.

The scenery changes noticeably throughout the evening. In daylight, you can see rows of greenhouses stretching across the hillsides, cultivated fields and distant mountain ridges. As the sun drops, the greenhouse roofs begin reflecting the warm light. Later, lights inside the greenhouses come on, gradually turning the valley into a patchwork of illuminated rectangles. That transition is one of the main reasons to stay on at Xom Leo rather than leaving immediately after sunset.

You can look for a safe public viewpoint where stopping is permitted. The cafés and restaurants overlooking the valley give you somewhere to sit, order food or take shelter from the wind.

One option is Tiệm Nướng & Chill Xóm Lèo, at 113 Huynh Tan Phat Street, Xuan Truong - Da Lat Ward. In 2026 it opens from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and its valley-facing seating allows visitors to watch the sunset and stay for dinner.

Menu prices in 2026, for food rather than entry to the Xom Leo area, include:

  • Stir-fried beef cubes: VND 160,000
  • Grilled beef with cheese and salted egg sauce: VND 209,000
  • Sturgeon hotpot: VND 320,000

From November through February, arriving between 3:45 PM and 4:15 PM gives you time to choose a table before the best evening light. In June and July, arriving around 5:00 PM may still be early enough, although you should allow additional time if the restaurant is busy.

Xom Leo is an area spread across many cafés and viewpoints, with no single official sunset platform. One café may have a clear western view, while another may be partly blocked by buildings, trees or a nearby hillside. Check the direction of the sun before choosing your seat.

Cheo Veooo Café

A relaxed sunset spot for couples

Sunset behind the western hills from Cheo Veooo.

Cheo Veooo is located at 116 Hung Vuong Street, inside Da Chien Alley, in Xuan Truong - Da Lat Ward. You will need transport from the central market area, since it is not a convenient walking destination from most downtown hotels.

The café occupies a hillside setting with wooden structures, outdoor seating and views across the valley. It suits travelers who want to spend an entire afternoon in one place rather than moving between several photography spots.

The café opens from about 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM. Closing time can shift, so check its social media page before visiting.

Access is another consideration. From the parking area, visitors need to walk down sections of sloping path and stone steps. The surface can become slippery after rain, particularly if you are wearing shoes without much grip.

For sunset portraits, choose a terrace seat with an open view rather than simply selecting the most decorated corner, which will not help much if the sun disappears behind a roof or a thick row of trees.

On weekends, arriving before 3:30-4:00 PM gives you a better chance of finding a suitable place to sit. During months with later sunsets, you can arrive a little later, but still allow time to order drinks and explore the seating areas.

Cheo Veooo is less suitable for travelers with limited mobility, families using strollers or anyone who wants a taxi to stop directly beside their table. A café with level access would be a better choice for them.

Thien Phuc Duc Hill

Wide skies and natural scenery

Grassy slopes and lone pine trees on Thien Phuc Duc Hill.

Thien Phuc Duc Hill suits travelers who would rather skip the cafés. The hill is in the Lang Biang - Da Lat Ward area, formerly part of Ward 7, approximately 6-10 km from the city center depending on your route.

It faces the Langbiang mountain area and offers wide views of the surrounding landscape. There are grassy sections, scattered pine trees and open slopes where you can photograph the distant hills without too many buildings in the frame. Because the hill is elevated, you have a better chance of seeing a broad stretch of sky than you would from a low point in a residential valley.

From central Da Lat, one approach follows Dinh Tien Hoang Street toward Thanh Mau and Chau Van Liem streets. However, the final access route may change depending on local paths and road conditions. Ask locally about the current parking area and walking route before starting the climb.

Thien Phuc Duc Hill is not organized like a ticketed tourist attraction with a staffed entrance, visitor facilities and lighting. Public access areas generally do not have a formal entrance ticket, although parking at a nearby private property may involve a separate fee.

Allow approximately 10-20 minutes to walk uphill, depending on the route and your fitness. For sunset photography, reach the top at least half an hour before the best light. You will have time to find a suitable position instead of rushing up the slope with the sun already disappearing.

This is a good choice for younger travelers, small groups and photographers comfortable walking on uneven ground. You can photograph silhouettes against the sky, isolated pine trees or the layers of distant mountains.

Even on the hilltop, you may not see the full solar disk disappear below the horizon. The sunset position changes throughout the year, and a distant ridge may still block the final moments.

If there has been heavy afternoon rain, skip Thien Phuc Duc Hill. Wet dirt paths, limited lighting and the need to descend after dark make it a poor choice when the weather is unstable.

Tuyen Lam Lake

Sunset reflections on the water

A wide, still lake with pine forest on the far shore.

Tuyen Lam Lake lies south of central Da Lat. From the Xuan Huong Lake area, follow the roads toward Trieu Viet Vuong Street or Truc Lam Zen Monastery. Depending on your exact destination, the journey typically takes around 20-30 minutes.

The lake is large, with several branches of water surrounded by pine forests and wooded hills. Sunset here feels different from Xom Leo: the best part is often the reflection of evening light on the lake rather than the sun itself.

On a calm afternoon, the water may reflect yellow, pink or violet colors from the sky. The surrounding pine-covered hills become darker, creating a landscape that can remain attractive even after direct sunlight disappears.

However, not every section of Tuyen Lam Lake has an unobstructed western view. Some parts lie between relatively high hills, so sunlight can disappear earlier than the official sunset time. For watching the sun itself approach the horizon, an elevated and more open viewpoint may be more reliable.

A convenient place to sit near the lake is The Seen House, a café in the Vuon Thuong area of the Tuyen Lam Lake tourist zone. The café has seating overlooking the water and the surrounding hills.

Prices in 2026 included:

  • Espresso: approximately VND 50,000
  • Vietnamese milk coffee: approximately VND 55,000
  • Latte: approximately VND 70,000

The café opens at around 7:00-7:30 AM and closes between 7:00 and 8:00 PM. Contact the café before setting off to confirm the hours, particularly on public holidays.

For a relaxed afternoon, travel to Tuyen Lam Lake around 3:30-4:00 PM, find a lakeside table and stay until the light begins fading. Thin clouds can actually improve the view by adding reflections and color to the water.

Tuyen Lam Lake is especially suitable for couples, landscape photographers and international visitors who want a quieter setting away from the busy city center. If heavy rain has already started, there is little reason to drive a long distance just to wait for the sky to clear.

Xuan Huong Lake

The easiest option in central Da Lat

Staying near Nguyen Chi Thanh, Bui Thi Xuan, Phan Boi Chau or Da Lat Market, you do not need to travel 8-10 km to enjoy the evening light: Xuan Huong Lake is a practical alternative.

The lake sits in the city center, with Tran Quoc Toan Street running around it. There is no separate admission fee for walking along the public lakeside paths, and you can simply start from whichever section is closest to your hotel.

For the best evening views, look for an open section along the eastern or northeastern shore with a view toward the west or southwest. From these areas, you may see the low afternoon light falling across the lake, trees and buildings around the water.

The limitation is that Xuan Huong Lake sits within the urban landscape. Nearby hills, tall trees and buildings interrupt parts of the horizon, so you should not expect a clear view of the sun every evening.

Its biggest advantage is convenience. Back from sightseeing at 4:00 PM with the sky still looking promising, you can walk to the lake without arranging another long taxi ride.

For street photography, the shadows of trees along the lakeside, passing vehicles and changing colors of the evening sky can make attractive compositions. There is no need to step into traffic or stand in the road to get a photograph.

Families with children or older travelers will find Xuan Huong Lake considerably easier than Thien Phuc Duc Hill. Choose a section with a wide pavement, places to rest and safe pedestrian access. Avoid walking too close to the water's edge during rain.

Loi Cua Gio Café

Sunset over the valley, then greenhouse lights

White flower beds at Loi Cua Gio under a golden evening sky.

Loi Cua Gio Café is located on Huynh Tan Phat Street in the Xom Leo-Trai Mat area, Xuan Truong - Da Lat Ward. The property has wooden structures, flower gardens and seating overlooking the greenhouse-filled valley.

Compared with the smaller hillside atmosphere of Cheo Veooo, Loi Cua Gio is better suited to travelers who prefer open spaces and several photography backgrounds.

As with any hillside café, the exact table matters. Choose seating with a clear view of the western sky rather than a corner blocked by trees or buildings. After sunset, you can remain at the café and watch the greenhouse lights gradually illuminate the valley below.

In 2026, drinks at Loi Cua Gio start at approximately VND 70,000. There is also an entrance package of around VND 90,000-100,000 per visitor, including one drink. Confirm the current admission arrangement with the café and ask whether a drink is included.

Allow around 25-30 minutes to reach the area from the city center, potentially more on busy weekends.

Loi Cua Gio and the other Xom Leo cafés work well for combining sunset watching with an early evening outing. One afternoon is only enough for a single café, though. Traveling between two nearby viewpoints during the final minutes of daylight may leave you missing the best light at both.

Which direction should you face to see the sunset?

Direction is one of the most important details when choosing a sunset viewpoint in Da Lat. It is correct to say that the sun sets in the west, but it does not set at exactly the same point on the horizon every day. The position changes throughout the year.

In Da Lat:

  • Around May to July: the sun sets northwest of due west, closer to west-northwest.
  • Around March and September: sunset occurs close to due west.
  • Around November to January: the sun sets southwest of due west, closer to west-southwest.

The sunset azimuth is near 294° around the June solstice and approximately 246° around the December solstice, measured clockwise from north. That is a substantial difference. A café seat with a direct sunset view in June may not offer the same view in December.

There are two different experiences worth distinguishing.

Watching the sun set directly: You need an elevated or open position with a clear view in the direction where the sun will disappear.

Watching the evening light: You only need a broad view of the sky, clouds or water reflecting the changing colors. You can still come away with good sunset photographs without seeing the sun itself.

Xom Leo and Thien Phuc Duc Hill are worth considering for elevated viewpoints. Tuyen Lam Lake and Xuan Huong Lake are better choices if your priority is the landscape in the evening light.

What is the best month to watch sunset in Da Lat?

December through March is generally the best period to visit Da Lat for sunsets, with the best chance of clear afternoon skies.

The dry season usually runs from December through March, while the rainy season can extend from April to November. The exact transition varies from year to year. This matters because a sunny morning in Da Lat does not guarantee a sunny evening.

December to March: the best overall period

This is usually the most favorable time for sunset photography and outdoor viewpoints. December and January tend to have more dry days than the middle of the rainy season. Afternoon skies can be clear, although evenings are chilly and exposed hillsides may become windy.

February and March are also good choices. The generally drier weather makes it easier to ride out to viewpoints, walk uphill and spend time sitting outdoors.

Even in these months, check the cloud and rain forecast for the specific day before heading to Xom Leo or Thien Phuc Duc Hill. The dry season does not guarantee a dramatic orange sunset every evening.

April and May: the beginning of wetter afternoons

April and May form part of the transition toward the rainy season. You can still get sunny evenings, particularly on days with scattered clouds. However, afternoon showers and thunderstorms become more likely, making sunset plans less predictable than in January or February.

On a two- or three-day trip, do not permanently assign sunset watching to one particular afternoon before checking the forecast. Keep your schedule flexible and choose the day with the most promising conditions.

June to September: later sunsets but more rain

This period includes the latest sunset times of the year, especially in June and July. The advantage is having more daylight for sightseeing. The disadvantage is the possibility of afternoon rain, thick cloud cover and low cloud or mist blocking distant views.

Sometimes the sky clears after a shower and produces impressive evening colors, but you cannot count on it. During the rainy season, a café with indoor or covered seating is usually a more sensible choice than an exposed hill reached by a muddy path.

October and November: a gradual seasonal change

October can still experience significant rainfall. By November, weather conditions often begin shifting toward the drier season, although the timing varies.

Early November does not mean the rainy season has completely finished. Check the afternoon forecast and watch the actual cloud cover before making a long trip outside the city.

Sunset also comes early during this period: around mid-November, the sun sets at approximately 5:18 PM. Aim to finish your other sightseeing activities before about 3:30 PM and leave the late afternoon for sunset.

Da Lat weather changes quickly. How can you tell whether sunset is worth the trip?

A beautiful sunset only requires enough open sky near the horizon where the sun will set, even if the rest of the sky is not completely clear.

A partly cloudy sky with a clear gap in the west lets low sunlight illuminate the underside of the clouds and create strong colors. Thick gray clouds from overhead to the horizon make the chances of seeing the sun much lower.

A practical approach is to check the weather at three stages.

Around 12:00-1:00 PM: check the hourly rain forecast

Do not rely on a single sun or rain icon for the whole day. Look at the forecast between 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM, focusing on the likelihood of thunderstorms, expected rainfall and cloud cover.

If heavy rain is predicted throughout the afternoon and evening, skip plans that involve climbing a hill. There is little benefit in traveling far just to wait beneath a completely overcast sky.

A short shower early in the afternoon does not rule out a café visit, but reassess the situation before leaving.

Around 2:30-3:30 PM: look toward the western sky

From central Da Lat, find an open area where you can observe the clouds to the west. Three situations are worth distinguishing.

Clear weather with thin clouds: Keep your plan for Xom Leo, Thien Phuc Duc Hill or a café with an open terrace.

Cloudy weather with occasional sunshine: Choose a café with covered seating and a broad view. You might not see the solar disk, but the evening light could still be attractive.

Continuous rain and low clouds: Cancel the hilltop visit. Choose a café closer to your hotel or spend the afternoon indoors.

Weather forecasts can change within a few hours, so make your final decision using the actual conditions.

Is it worth waiting after an afternoon shower?

Yes, if the rain has stopped and you are somewhere safe. Sunlight breaking through in the west can turn the remaining clouds into striking layers of color. Keep your phone or camera ready for that moment.

An afternoon without a visible sunset can still be spent enjoying coffee, dinner or a walk through town. There is no need to rush toward another distant viewpoint when the weather is already unfavorable.

How should you travel to Da Lat sunset viewpoints?

The best transport depends on your destination as much as its distance from the city center.

Xuan Huong Lake: From a downtown hotel, walking is often the easiest option. You avoid looking for parking or calling a car when the roads are busy.

Cheo Veooo: You can reach the Hung Vuong Street area by motorbike, taxi or ride-hailing car. However, larger vehicles may need to stop outside the alley, leaving you to walk down to the café.

Xom Leo and Loi Cua Gio: A taxi or car with a driver works well for international visitors, couples unfamiliar with the roads and groups planning to stay until dark. Riding a motorbike yourself takes confidence on slopes, bends and in reduced visibility.

Tuyen Lam Lake: A car or motorbike is more practical than walking. The lake is spread across a large area, and your chosen café or viewpoint may be some distance from the main access road.

Thien Phuc Duc Hill: Transport will only get you near the base. You still need to find suitable parking and walk uphill. Do not try to force a scooter up steep, uneven dirt tracks.

For viewpoints outside the city, arrange your return journey before dark. You can book a round-trip car or ask the driver whether a later pickup is possible rather than assuming a ride-hailing service will be readily available everywhere.

A one-afternoon Da Lat sunset itinerary

Choosing one viewpoint and staying there gives you more time to enjoy the landscape and photograph the changing light than trying to visit every sunset location on the list.

Itinerary 1: Xom Leo for friends and couples

This schedule works well from approximately November through February, when sunset occurs before 6:00 PM.

TimeActivity
2:45 PMLeave central Da Lat
3:15-3:30 PMArrive around Huynh Tan Phat Street and choose a café
3:45-4:15 PMTake photos while the valley is still bright
4:15-5:30 PMWatch the evening light and sunset, depending on the month
5:30-6:15 PMStay for greenhouse lights or dinner
After 6:15 PMReturn to central Da Lat using your arranged transport

In June or July, shift the sunset-watching portion approximately 30-45 minutes later, based on that day's actual sunset time.

There is no need to add Cheo Veooo to the same afternoon. Both are worth visiting, but traveling between them and finding another seat could mean missing the best light.

Itinerary 2: Tuyen Lam Lake for a quieter afternoon

Tuyen Lam Lake makes for a slower afternoon away from popular photography spots.

TimeActivity
2:30 PMLeave the city center for Tuyen Lam Lake
3:00-3:30 PMWalk around a publicly accessible section of the lake
3:30-4:00 PMArrive at a lakeside café
4:00-5:30 PMEnjoy the landscape and photograph the evening reflections
After sunsetReturn downtown or have dinner at your chosen location

This plan works best during the drier months. In the rainy season, you can shorten the lakeside walk and go directly to the café.

After steady rain since before 3:00 PM, there is little reason to insist on the lake itinerary; switching to a central café will save travel time.

How to photograph sunset in Da Lat without making faces too dark

Sunsets are relatively easy to photograph as landscapes, but portraits are more difficult because the brightest light comes from behind the subject. You can improve your results with a smartphone simply by adjusting your position and exposure.

Taking portraits with the sun behind your subject

Position the person slightly to one side of the frame rather than directly in front of the sun. Tap the person's face on your phone screen to set the exposure.

When the camera brightens the face, the sky may become washed out. Lower the exposure slightly, take several shots and choose the one with the best balance between the face and background.

Exposing for the sky instead gives you a silhouette: the person will appear dark, with their outline standing out against the sunset. This works well on Thien Phuc Duc Hill or at elevated viewpoints around Xom Leo.

Photographing lakes and reflections

At Tuyen Lam Lake or Xuan Huong Lake, place the horizon around one-third of the way through the frame when the sky is the main attraction. Water reflecting several colors deserves more of the image.

Avoid moving too close to the water's edge, especially when the ground is wet. A stable position a short distance back is enough to capture the scenery.

Keep photographing for 10-20 minutes after sunset

Many visitors put their phones away as soon as the sun disappears, but the sky may continue changing color for several minutes afterward.

Stay in the same position and take a photograph every few minutes. As the light fades, your phone may automatically use a longer exposure time. Hold it steady or rest it against a stable surface.

At Xom Leo, the period after sunset is the time for greenhouse photographs. You may be able to capture the remaining blue light in the sky and the warm yellow greenhouse lights in the same frame.

What should you bring for sunset watching?

Da Lat can still feel warm when you set out in the afternoon, but the temperature often drops quickly as the sun gets lower. A light jacket, shoes with good grip and a small folding umbrella are usually more useful than carrying excessive camera equipment.

Before visiting a café, check its current opening hours, menu and reservation arrangements through its official channels. Valley-facing terraces can become busy on weekends, and operating hours may change seasonally.

For a hilltop visit, bring drinking water, a charged phone and a small flashlight in case the return walk takes longer than expected. Do not enter areas marked as private property, cultivated land or restricted access simply because an old footpath appears to lead toward a good viewpoint.

International travelers may find it useful to save the destination address in Vietnamese to show their driver. Names such as Xóm Lèo and Cheo Veooo can be easier to locate on maps when entered using their original spelling.

Friends traveling together should agree on a meeting point and return time before separating to take photographs. Popular cafés can become crowded near sunset, while natural hills often have no staff available to help visitors.

Which sunset spot should you choose if you have only one afternoon?

Sunset photography and a glowing valley point to Xom Leo. You have several possible viewpoints, and the illuminated greenhouses remain attractive after the daylight fades.

Cheo Veooo is the choice for a small hillside café. It is well suited to a leisurely afternoon, although you need to account for the sloping access path.

For natural hill scenery and open skies, consider Thien Phuc Duc Hill when the paths are dry and the weather is stable. It is not the right choice if you dislike uphill walking or intend to stay long after dark.

Tuyen Lam Lake gives you a quiet lakeside afternoon. The sun may disappear early behind the surrounding hills, but the water and pine forest provide a different kind of evening landscape.

Xuan Huong Lake is the easy fallback when you are staying downtown, do not want to travel far or are unsure about the weather. A short walk to an open section of the western-facing lakeshore is enough to enjoy the last light.

Before leaving your hotel, check the rain forecast from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM and look up the sunset time for that exact date. With good weather, choose one destination and leave about an hour before sunset; if heavy rain is expected, cancel the hilltop trip and find a café closer to the center.

FAQ

What time is sunset in Da Lat?

It depends on the month. In November, sunset is generally around 5:18-5:22 PM, while in June and July it happens later, around 6:10-6:15 PM. Arrive 45-60 minutes beforehand to find a good position and enjoy the evening light. Mountains to the west may block the sun earlier than the official sunset time.

Xom Leo is a good choice for valley photographs and illuminated greenhouses. Thien Phuc Duc Hill offers open natural scenery, while Cheo Veooo and Loi Cua Gio are suitable for café visits. Tuyen Lam Lake is attractive for water reflections, and Xuan Huong Lake is the most convenient option for travelers staying downtown.

Which month has the best sunsets in Da Lat?

December through March generally offers the best chance of clear afternoon weather because it falls within the dry season. Rain is more likely from April through November, especially during the middle of the rainy season. Regardless of the month, check the hourly forecast for the day you plan to go.
